The Edge of You by Theresa DaLayne

Publication date: September 25th 2014
Genres: New Adult, Romance

He left home to escape. She made a new life out of guilt. Neither one expected to find love—but not even the Arctic can cool this steamy romance.
Maya knows she’s doing the right thing by moving to Alaska with her parents, but that doesn’t mean she has to be happy about it. Forced to give up a scholarship to a prestigious art school, she relocates to a Podunk town with one college the size of her high school cafeteria, all to help hold her family together after the death of her little sister. But a fresh start can only do so much.
Jake doesn’t like handouts and he certainly doesn’t need any distractions. Working on a salmon boat in Kodiak, Alaska is the only way to pay for his mother’s surgery back in the lower forty-eight. Juggling college courses and constant worry about his mother’s health, Jake couldn’t imagine anything else fitting into his life. That is, until he meets Maya, the sexy Californian artist who tints his world in technicolor.
But when Maya’s family starts to crumble and Jake’s mom takes a turn for the worse, will they drag each other down, or can they find what they were missing all along?
In this new adult romance, Theresa DaLayne paints a swoon-worthy story about life under the midnight sun, following your heart, and learning to live on the edge.

My rating:

*spoiler free*

The Edge of You follows the perspective of Maya and Jake. Maya is moving to Alaska with her parents after her little sister's death. She believes it's the right thing to do for her family even though it means giving up her dream and the life she has always known.
Jake has worked hard hos whole life and doesn't like asking others for help. He works on a salmon boat in Alaska to pay for his mother's health care back in the mainland. He's working hard with his job and college, but when Maya steps into his life he has more to fight for.

The Edge of You is a sweet book. Very quickly you get invested in the characters and want the best for them. At the beginning you wonder what it is that makes Maya feel guilty and why she's giving everything up to move with her parents to Alaska,  really pulls you into the story because you want to find out what it is.
Jake was amazing. The things he does for others never really doing much for himself, all he wants is to take care of his mother and make a better life for them. It's very sweet how he takes care of everything. At times you just wanted to give him a big hug and tell him to relax.
I liked that there was the first contact with Maya and Jake, but still we get to see them as two people and get to know them each before knowing them as a couple. Some of it took too long for my taste cause I really wanted more interaction between them throughout the book.
When they do start to fall in love it's really sweet and there's actual cause. It's more realistic. Their feelings actually grew througout the book as they got to know eachother.
As the problems in their life both grow for Maya and Jake it gets harder for them to be together.
They both have to find their way in life, Maya working out how she can still pursue her art even in Alaska. Jake since all he wants is to take care of his mother who can't be in Alaska with him due to the health care she needs.

This is a case where the two point of views make sense and are done really well. I loved seeing both their view of their first sort of meeting and how it is. Especially since at times they didn't see eachother as much so it really made sense to see what went on in both their lives.

Again, really just an overall sweet book! Great story and amazingly developed characters that you can't help but wish the best for paired with some fantastic writing.

About the author:

Theresa DaLayne is a north-south-east-western kind of girl with a quirky personality to match her nomad life. Born in California, she migrated to three different cities in Washington State, a tiny island in Alaska, North Carolina, and finally to the suburbs of Ohio where she currently lives with her husband, three kids, vegetarian cat, and her ungrateful fish.

Always on the lookout for a new story, Theresa is a shameless eavesdropper and will take anyone who provides inspiration and mold them into a character without a second thought. She enjoys writing both paranormal and contemporary stories, considering her mind wanders between worlds of fantasy while she’s forced to live in the real world, very much against her will.

  1. Great review, Christina! I love dual POV books and this one sounds sweet and very character driven. I'll def need to give it a try and meet Maya and Jake myself! :)

  2. Thanks so much, Christina, for the amazing review! I have never done a duel POV like this, where the characters are on their own journeys and meet along the way. I am thrilled you enjoyed it!
